Foundation provides way for community to honor student

In September 2006, Jessica Pumphrey - a junior at Central High School - was killed in a tragic automobile accident. Within 48 hours of her accident, the
parents of one of Jessica’s best friends donated money to start a Jessica Pumphrey Memorial Scholarship fund with the Shenandoah Community Foundation.

Withi
n another 24 hours, a press release went out from the Foundation, and the community responded. Jessi’s closest friends promoted the scholarship through letters and appearances on local radio and TV shows. The media responded with offers of free air time and newspaper space. Sports events and teams throughout the county contributed their 50/50 winnings.

Jessi’s family chose to offer d
onations that came to them personally. Checks poured in from individuals, businesses and civic groups. As that first donor hoped, the scholarship fund became a channel for grief and loss and helped in the healing of those who loved Jessica.

Since September 2006, the scholarship fund has surpassed the first goal of $5,000 set by the high school friends and now exceeds $6,000. Their next goal is to reach at least $10,000. The first scholarship award will be made in June 2008 to honor someone from Jessi’s graduating class who exemplifies the characteristics of scholarship, sportsmanship and integrity that Jessi possessed.
The inspiring effort of these young people, the work of the Foundation and the outpouring of support from the community has been a both a healing and a bonding experience for the entire Shenandoah County area.
